INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF STATISTICS PRAISES CONTRIBUTIONS OF WOMEN STATISTICIANSON INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY

International Year of Statistics PRAISES CONTRIBUTIONS OF WOMEN STATISTICIANSON INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY
Statistics 2013 participants laud women statisticians
for advancing statistical sciences

Raver, Maharashtra, India , MARCH8, 2013—The Raver Taluka Science Teacher Association, Raver and the more than 1,775 organizations in 121 countriesparticipating in the International Year of Statistics (Statistics2013) todayjoin women around the world in the celebration of International Women’s Day.
Observed each year on March 8, International Women's Dayis a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future. In places like China, Russia, Vietnam and Bulgaria, International Women's Day is a national holiday. The event has been observed since the early 1900s, which was a time of great expansion and turbulence in the industrialized world that saw booming population growth and the rise of radical ideologies.

Statistics2013 is a worldwide initiative that is highlighting the contributions of the statistical sciences to finding solutions to global challenges. Raver Taluka Science Teacher Association, Raver is a Statistics2013 participating organization.
Like their counterparts in other professional fields, women pioneers in the statistical sciences have made outstanding and trailblazing contributions to their profession and have opened the field to more women.
“We salute the world’s women this International Women’s Day—a special day dedicated to them and their achievements past, present and future,” says  Mr. Sandeep D. Patil   “The statistical sciences profession and our global society has greatly benefited from the groundbreaking contributions of women statisticians including Florence Nightingale, who used statistics to modernize health care; Dr. Janet Lane-Claypon,who made several important contributions to epidemiology by using and improving its use of statistics; and Janet Norwood, who as the first woman commissioner of the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics made major contributions to government statistics.”
Today, the number of women among mathematicians and statisticians equals the number of men, says a U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey report. Further, women statisticians are influential in many countries—41 of the world’s 190 statistical offices were headed by women in 2010, says The World’s Women 2010: Trends and Statistics, a report commissioned by the United Nations. Lastly, women have earned more than 40% of math and statistics bachelor’s degrees throughout the past four decades.
In honor of women worldwide, today and through the weekend on its website (www.statistics2013.org)Statistics 2013features the International Women’s Day logo as well as several special articles and items that highlight the important contributions of women statisticians, including:
·         Blog posts written by members of the American Statistical Association’s Committee for Women in Statistics and the Caucus for Women in Statistics
·         A self-authored “Statistician Job of the Week” articleby the Smithsonian Institution’s chief mathematical statistician, Dr. Lee-Ann Hayek
·         A “Statistic of the Day” focused on the influence of women worldwide

Mathematics of Planet Earth - 2013

Mathematics of Planet Earth-2013
The fascinating world of Mathematics provides us an unlimited scope to perceive problems under three situations - concrete, abstract and intuition. The important segment of mathematics- the ability to reason and think clearly is extremely useful in every aspect of life. Experiences with mathematical modes of thought build mathematical power- a capacity of mind of increased value in this technological age that enables one to read critically, to identify fallacies, to detect biases, to assess risk and to suggest alternatives. From medical technology to economic planning, from genetics to geology, mathematics has made an indelible imprint on every part of modern science, even as science itself has stimulated for growth of many branches of mathematics. Therefore, Mathematics is a powerful way of investigating and understanding the world.

With this motive, the International Mathematical Community brought forward the idea of Mathematics of Planet Earth (MPE) – 2013. During this year an attempt will be made to explore the Mathematical framework in Nature and to see how Mathematics with the help of other disciplines can provide solutions that will help to face the challenging problems on the planet earth, like- the problem arising out of growing population competing for the limited global resources, the dramatic meteorological changes in climate, environmental issues, etc. The ideas generated and the initiatives thought during MPE-2013 are likely to make an impact on the society in such a way that a new generation of researchers will be motivated to explore mathematics involved in scientific problems related to sustainability of Planet Earth. These efforts may provide opportunities for exploring Mathematics with interdisciplinary approaches in the context of Evolution of Planet Earth and its development (historical, geographical, political, astronomical, environmental, etc.).
The Department of Education in Science and Mathematics (DESM), NCERT New Delhi, is organizing various activities with following specific objectives on the occasion of Mathematics of Planet Earth-2013.
· To establish association with various organizations (departments), schools and community to play the role in solving need based problems faced by the society.
· To organize a competition for designing and display of virtual or physical exhibits in a National Exhibition and to give a National Award.
· To conduct workshops towards an awareness of interdisciplinary approach in Mathematics.
· To organize webinars.
· To organize a National Conference on MPE-2013
· To publish proceeding of all the activities done under MPE-2013.
